ROCKFORD, Ill. (Aug. 17, 2026) — The Greater Rockford Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) has recognized two individuals for their exceptional contributions to the community at its 2026 Annual Dinner, presenting Jim Derry with the Citizen of the Year award and Kate Ambrose with the Made for Rockford Impact Award.

The GRCC Annual Dinner provides a platform to recognize individuals making a meaningful difference in the Rockford region, celebrating leadership, service, and commitment to community growth.

Jim Derry Named 2026 Citizen of the Year

Jim Derry, CEO of Field, was recognized as GRCC's 2026 Citizen of the Year for his sustained commitment to mentorship, leadership, and volunteerism throughout the Rockford community.

In 1990, Derry and his brother acquired a local company that has since averaged 19 percent annual growth for thirty-six consecutive years. The company now serves customers around the world and, despite the ability to headquarter anywhere, has chosen to remain in the Rockford region.

For 18 consecutive years, 100 percent of Derry's employees have contributed to the United Way campaign. In 2020, as companies across the country implemented layoffs in response to economic uncertainty, Derry did not let go of a single employee.

Derry teaches leadership at Rockford University and freely shares his company's culture playbook with any organization that requests it. Each summer, he and his wife welcome children from the Boys & Girls Club to their home for waterskiing, bonfires, and other activities, personally managing every detail of the experience.

Kate Ambrose Receives Made for Rockford Impact Award

The Made for Rockford Impact Award recognizes a resident who relocated to the region and has since become deeply invested in its success. This year's honor was presented to Kate Ambrose of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois.

Ambrose relocated to Rockford in 2023 and has since built her career, her marriage, and her life in the region. At the Community Foundation, she stepped into an expanded role this year and helped direct $590,000 in scholarships to local students.

Beyond her professional contributions, Ambrose is a consistent presence at community events throughout the region, including Stroll on State, City Market, Food Truck Tuesdays, Starlight, and ArtScene. She has also encouraged others to relocate to Rockford, with at least one couple making the move as a direct result of her advocacy.

"These two awards represent what makes our community strong," said Angela Kay Larson, CEO of GRCC. "Jim Derry has spent decades building a culture of generosity and loyalty that extends far beyond his own company. Kate Ambrose shows what's possible when someone chooses this community, loves it, and then commits fully to its future. We're proud to recognize both of them."

The Citizen of the Year Award was sponsored by PNC; the Made for Rockford award was sponsored by GoRockford.
