The Rockford Chamber would like to thank our website sponsors:

Wester Wuori, 39
Rockford Health System
Director of Marketing and
Public Relations

By Paul Anthony Arco

Whether he’s running a grueling marathon or managing a communications crisis, Wester Wuori doesn’t let obstacles stand in his way of ultimate success. “I’m very goal oriented,” he said.

Wuori has always enjoyed an athletic lifestyle. But when he broke his leg eight years ago, it might have been a setback that would slow some competitors down. Not Wuori, who used the injury as additional motivation to succeed. “It was the best thing to happen to me.”

He pushed himself past the limits during rehabilitation and, soon after, completed a 100-mile bike ride.

Since then, he’s competed in triathlons, half marathons and the Chicago Marathon three times, where he’s endured such obstacles as searing heat, food poisoning and another leg injury, just to cross the finish line.

Staying the course is the only way Wuori knows how to manage his busy life. At Rockford Health System, he works with a team of 11 marketing professionals, who are responsible for delivering frontline communications for one of the area’s largest health care organizations.

When he’s not enjoying time with his wife and two small children, Wuori tackles various volunteer projects throughout the community. He used his marketing skills to help Westminster Presbyterian Church plan and implement a new facility on Rockford’s northeast side. He is a member of the Rockford College Alumni Association National Board of Directors, and currently is working on his master’s degree in communications at Northern Illinois University.

One of his greatest passions is working behind the scenes in the political arena.

Wuori volunteers to help local candidates who are running for offices such as mayor, state’s attorney or alderman. “Communications is the link that connects a strong candidate with informed voters,” said Wuori, who has no political aspirations of his own at this time.

“I enjoy helping a candidate shape a coherent message that resonates with people,” he said. “Win or lose, it’s always a great experience meeting and working with the other volunteers.”
