Tonya Thayer, 36
Rockford Area Habitat for
Humanity Inc.
Executive Director

By Lorna Collier

As executive director for Rockford Habitat for Humanity, Tonya Thayer wears not only the occasional hard hat, but many other hats as well.

“I’m the file clerk, the janitor, the receptionist,” she says. “I do all of the PR, write for all the grant money, and I do everything in-between. It’s a lot of fun.”

Habitat for Humanity builds five houses to sell to needy families in Rockford each season, from May through early fall. It’s a feat that requires the efforts of about 450 volunteers, coordinated by Thayer.

Before taking the job in December, 2004, Thayer didn’t have construction know-how, but did have experience working for non-profits. The Monroe, Wis., native, who grew up in Stockton, worked briefly at Northern Illinois University after graduating from the school with a degree in communications. She also has worked for a downstate health system and for the Fabricators and Manufacturers Association in Rockford.

While at Habitat, Thayer, 36, has learned to wield a hammer and can assist when needed. She also has helped implement new programs and procedures. She started a mentor program to match new home owners with volunteers who can walk them though the challenges new homeowners face. She also started ReStore, a surplus building supply store based at North Towne Mall, where builders can donate excess goods for sale to the public, with profits going to Habitat.

When not on the job, Thayer spends time exercising. A dedicated tri athlete, Thayer trains daily, alternating running, swimming and bicycling. “I believe exercise is important to mental, physical, and spiritual health,” she says.

She says there is a lot more to do in her job: More money to raise, more families to help. “We are celebrating our 20th year this year. I hope to stick around and help—maybe for another 20 years.”
