Luan Dean, 39
Lula’s Vintage Boutique
Co-Owner

By Emily Hartzog

Luan Dean gave up corporate life in search of something different and found herself co-owner of Lula’s Vintage Boutique, part owner of High Maintenance Salon, and an associate at Joseph James Partners.

She works six days a week, yet still finds time to serve on the River District Association Events Committee and volunteer for the Humane Society, where she is currently helping to plan the “Fur Ball” in 2009.

Dean earned her degree in marketing and communications from the University of Dayton, and held marketing positions at SBX and Textron, where she met fellow vintage clothing enthusiast Loretta Lundgren.

“We figured our shop would be a little of me, a little of her. A little ‘Lu’ and little ‘La’,” Dean says. “That’s how we got the name for Lula’s.”

Lula’s Vintage Boutique really reflects Dean’s personal style. It doesn’t follow form or fashion—it’s a little roaring 20s/Rockabilly/disco/80s party. She doesn’t shop with a particular Lula’s customer in mind; rather she figures that her eclectic tastes will provide for just about anyone with a sense of adventure.

When she’s not at Lula’s, you may find her at High Maintenance Salon on Longwood Street catching up on bookkeeping or at the SupplyCore building assisting tenants for Joseph James. Dean has a list of other projects she’d love to tackle, including another
business venture at some point, and she encourages others to do the same.

“Take an active role in your community. Instead of saying, ‘I would…’, just jump in and do it!”

Name the adjective that best describes you.
Outgoing or outrageous

Hidden talent
I like to karaoke ... and love to sing. Was in a rock band back in the day.

What do you like to do “off the clock”?
I don’t feel like I am ever “on the clock”... from the time I wake, ’til I fall asleep ... I am working on something ... whether it be my business, my position with JJP or a fundraiser.
